Restore the Centerpiece of Chase Park

About the Project
In the center of Chase Park, the flagpole foundation and surrounding garden bed are in serious need of attention. Reconstructing the stone structure, adding slate steps and increasing the wall height to add seating have all been approved by Chatham’s Select Board, the Department of Public Works (DPW), and the Parks & Recreation Commission!
· Multiple estimates put required stonework and masonry costs between $25-$30k.
· $20k has already been donated by private donors and the Chatham Garden Club!
· Join us by contributing towards the remaining need of $10k.
Reviews have been completed and coordinated with the Town Manager and the DPW. We are driving towards a late October start!
The Chatham Garden Club will design, install and maintain the new flagpole garden (as we already tend to the garden at the Cross Street entrance). Happy bees and butterflies to follow!
With Acknowledgement of the History & Mission
Originally donated in the 1990s by Kathy Heberton in memory of her husband Robert M. Heberton, this flagpole stands on land historically owned by her family, the Bigelows. Kathy lived on Shattuck Place for many years and was a founding member of the Chatham blood drive. Kathy was also a key supporter of the Creative Arts Center. As part of the restoration project, the memorial plaque to Robert Heberton will be refurbished.

This iconic centerpiece of the park was originally filled with attractive plantings; over time, the area was neglected and eventually the planter area was filled with small stones and overtaken by weeds. Please join us in enhancing and preserving this beautiful park.
